2016: Kaleidoscope of the Year

How does one measure an entire year? That question has been on my mind quite a bit lately as 2016 came to a close and we look ahead to new beginnings. But, I like to measure it in appreciation, gratitude, and love.

Last month, when I was writing about outdoor spaces in my newsletter, I promised I'd take this month to talk about outdoor entertaining.  And whether you're doing that entertaining in your (newly designed) outdoor space or in your existing yard, patio or terrace—as long as you are capturing the joys that our long summer days hold—that's all that matters!  What I've always found is that those joys are many (and the times, oh, so memorable) when I take the party out of the house. Formal or casual, themed or non-themed, I love hosting special occasions outside. It always feels just a little more exciting when I get a chance to create moments outside that usually happen...

And with those long days come lazy afternoons, easy evenings and leisurely nights, all of which make summer perfect for outdoor living. And that ties right in with one of design’s most current trends: bringing the indoors outside.

Pantone’s Love Affair with Pastels

I’m a lover of traditions. Somehow, I think they ground me to who I am and what I care about. And whether they’re cultural, religious, or personal, traditions are comforting to me as well as being meaningful and joy filled. This is also true of work traditions. One tradition I look forward to every December, and think about during January, is Pantone’s announcement of their color of the year.
